The First City of the Last Empire: Geoarchaeology of the Sasanian Circular City of Gur
Project Acronym: AQUA-IGNIS
Topics: Antiquity, Environment, Reconstitution, Hydraulics, Urbanism
Disciplinary Fields: Archaeology, Geo-Archaeology, History, Palaeo-Environment
Summary: The AQUA-IGNIS project seeks to reconstruct the genesis of the circular city of Firouzabad, Iran, and its environment in late Antiquity. This city was the first urban administrative centre established during the last Persian empire, the Sassanid Empire. Archaeologists and historians question the environmental factors and impacts of this site, which was established ex nihilo around 224 in a fully irrigated area surrounded by mountains. To answer these questions, the AQUA-IGNIS project plans to carry out research at the crossroads of geo-archaeology, palaeo-environmental methodology and the methods of archaeology of buildings and topography.
