Role in Bacterial Competition and Host Colonization of a Novel Toxin of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

Summary: Bacterial infectious diseases are the result of multifactorial processes affected by the interplay between virulence factors and host targets. A common strategy shared by pathogens is the direct delivery of toxins in eukaryotic host cells. A very novel concept indicates that during host intestine colonization pathogens fight against gut microbiota by injection of antibacterial toxins in competitors.
This is the first time that antibacterial toxins are shown to be key in the context of the host cell. P. aeruginosa is a bacterium responsible for nosocomial infections in immuno-compromised patients and for chronic pulmonary colonization and death of cystic fibrosis individuals. We aim at understanding if a lung pathogen like P. aeruginosa may use an antibacterial toxin to compete with the lung microbiota during host colonization. The main objective is to study a novel toxin that might carry on an antibacterial function during host colonization towards airway microbiota or pathogens in case of CF patients. A better understanding of the infection process will be very usefull in order to develop inhibitory molecules that affect bacterial pathogenicity rather than bacterial survival, in other words anti-virulence molecules as alternative to classical antibiotics.
